Client Chats Series — We had the pleasure of hearing Bobby Goodman tell the story of his family-owned mail order gift company, Goodies from Goodman, and how they came full circle to their current business model.

Tell us about your business: Goodies from Goodman.

Our business is about family and longevity. My grandfather left his candy-store job in 1916 to start his own business, selling produce from a horse and buggy. Eventually we expanded into catering and florist operations. Over the last 6 - 7 years we have gone back to our roots. Now, in our 99th year, we concentrate on local and international orders of gift baskets and various foods, such as smoked meats and snacks. We serve individual and corporate clients, with gifts designed for birthdays, baby showers, holidays and special events.

    How did you find SixB?

My wife worked at her father’s company, and he bought labels from Farzin (at SixB). Thirty years ago, my wife introduced my mother to Farzin. Mom, the creative genius who came up with the gift basket concepts and designs, now had this great referral for a label printer. Also, we liked the idea that SixB Labels is a family business, just like ours. So Mom felt there was no need to look any further.

How did the label development go?

Slowly, over a long time. Originally, another company produced our labels. Our suppliers manufactured the fine foodstuffs we distributed, and we put simple, square or rectangular gold foil product labels on our packages and baskets, listing ingredients. We added circles of different sizes and finally, after a company reorganization, a foil label shaped like an apple with a bite out of it. That is now our logo, and our apple predates Apple’s apple! SixB produces all of our labels now, and we kept on with gold foil and black print because it speaks of quality. As we like to say, we’re not expensive — we just look that way!
