Roaring into WestPack 2020

As we enter the 20s of the 21st Century it will be interesting to see how spectacular the decade will truly be. The SixB Labels family is optimistic about what the new year and decade will bring. Trade shows have their own "roaring" natures and for being one of the largest annual packaging events, WestPack Anaheim is no exception. This is why we are happy to exhibit in Booth 5152 from February 11-13, 2020 at the Convention Center. Everyone who works in or buys from the printing industry knows that, like a variety of other businesses, printing is undergoing numerous and seismic changes. From rising demand for mass customization to the growth of digital printing to increased competition from other channels there’s a mix of positives and negatives in the industry. All the while, something unforeseen just a couple of years ago may influence the fortunes of the printing industry, and have a real impact on businesses: Tariffs.

This “T-word” has been a cause for concern for businesses and consumers alike, and we believe it is valuable to share more information about tariffs, by defining current events and forecasting what could happen in the near future. While SixB Labels is based in the Southwest our clients are national and we operate accordingly.

Fortunately for our clients and their customers, sourcing at SixB Labels is done in such a way that the potential impact of most recent tariffs is negated. The tariffs on these imported goods do not affect our company, because we don’t use raw materials from China, so we do not look to see price increases in our supplies. All the while, in this blog we look at how generally trade tariffs impact printing.

Here at SixB Labels, to meet our goal of Simplifying Labeling for our current and prospective clients, we have developed a white paper on the current Food and Drug Administration regulatory requirements governing CBD product labels. The passage of the 2018 Farm Bill legalized industrial hemp and its CBD derivative products by declaring it no longer a Schedule I substance, and from that time until the present, the regulatory environment for CBD has tended to be lax. Products in a wide range of formats — from vape pens to topicals, to consumables — have been marketed and sold.

More recently, the FDA has been making moves to tighten the rules for merchants and distributors. They have been sending out warning letters indicating that they believe CBD to be a drug, and restricting how it can be marketed and sold, declaring it illegal to include in supplements or other consumables, or labeled with health claims. And yet some State laws appear to contradict these regulations.

These rapidly changing laws, and the apparent conflict between Federal, State, and local regulations surrounding these products, have created an uncertain environment. Manufacturers and distributors naturally want to avoid getting into trouble with either the FDA or local or state law enforcement agencies, and the inconsistencies in the patchwork of regulations tend to leave those currently working in, or wanting to join, the CBD industry in the dark. We believe this white paper can help guide CBD product manufacturers and distributors on what is legal to include on their labels and in their advertising and social media copy.

Client Chat Series – When I spoke with Nader Naim at our client company, Cake Craft, his excitement and enthusiasm for the company, its growth, and its mission were very much on display. Cake Craft, maker of fondant and sprinkles and baker of (delicious) cookies, sits in a business park not far from that of SixB Labels. We started off our meeting with a company tour, but only after we had donned the face masks and hair nets required by Health & Safety regulations. We then walked through a sparkling, very modern production facility, and finished with a sit-down interview. Nader shared the following information about their business and how we have helped their growth since they moved to Garland, Texas.

Some good news for companies and consumers looking to use eco-friendly materials in print production — Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper and environmentally responsible water-based inks have become readily available and economically viable! In this post, we will look at both the benefits of using water-based instead of solvent-based inks in label printing, and the benefits of choosing FSC-certified paper over conventional paper.

Client Chats Series — Our client company, Dallas Distilleries, maker of the Herman Marshall brand of Texas whiskies, hides in plain sight off the main road in Garland, Texas, amid sprawling warehouses in a business park. Behind an unassuming façade, fronted by a shop selling whiskey by the bottle, sits a cavernous space full of open-top cypress fermentation tanks and white oak casks, where a big gleaming pot still, like an engine from a steampunk movie, holds pride of place.

I participated in one of their weekend tours, full of history, chemistry, and fun. We listened to an account of how the whiskey is made, sampled bottled products, including bourbon and rye, and tasted the sour mash as well as the white dog — the new whiskey before it is aged. Along with other customers, I got to fill, cork, and label the bottle of bourbon I bought. Then Herman Beckley, who leads the tours, sat down with me to share some more details of their company’s history and explain how their experience working with SixB Labels has helped them to showcase and sell their products.
